How close can a perforation be to a fold?

Short answer: Keep the perforation at least 1/8″ (3 mm) from a fold on text-weight papers, and 3/16″–1/4″ (5–6 mm) on cover stocks. Any closer risks cracking at the fold or the piece tearing prematurely.

Guidelines only: Stock, coating, grain direction, and finishing all affect results. If your layout has tight margins, please contact our team so we can review and test before you print.

Does paper thickness matter?

Text 70–100# (≈90–148 gsm): ≥ 1/8″ (3 mm)
Cover 80–100# (≈216–271 gsm): ≥ 3/16″ (5 mm)
Heavy cover 110–130# (≈298–350 gsm): ≥ 1/4″ (6 mm)
Notes:

  • Standard perf is fine for text stocks; add a light score for the fold.

  • On cover, use a deep score; consider micro-perf when space is tight.

  • On heavy cover, score first; micro-perf preferred; test and adjust TPI.

Perf type near a fold
  • Micro-perf (≈20–52 TPI) tears cleanly and weakens the sheet less—best when clearance is tight.

  • Standard perf (≈8–12 TPI) is “toothier” and needs more distance from the fold.

Best practices
  • Score first, then fold. Use the right rule/matrix to prevent fiber burst across the perf.

  • Mind the grain. Folds parallel to grain perform better, especially near perfs.

  • Avoid intersections. Don’t let a perf cross the fold; if unavoidable, add short ties (skip-perf bridges) across the fold.

  • Coated/gloss stocks: Treat like heavier cover; favor 3/16″–1/4″ clearance.

  • Prototype & test. Run a small sample on the actual stock/coating and fold-test before committing.

Can the perf sit on the fold?

We don’t recommend it. A perf on the fold behaves like a zipper and often splits during finishing or mailing. If design demands it, use skip-perfs (ties) and plan a higher spoilage allowance.

When space is tight
  • Switch to micro-perf and increase score depth.

  • Add a narrow hinge panel to gain clearance.

  • Consider a fugitive glue “tear-open” in place of a perf for some designs.
