Printing on Felt Paper: What to Expect

Printing on Felt Paper: What to Expect

Felt paper offers a unique, textured finish that enhances the tactile and visual appeal of printed pieces. However, the same texture that gives it charm also affects how ink or toner adheres to the surface—especially with digital printing. If you're considering using felt paper for your project, here's what you should know.

FAQ: Printing on Felt Paper

Q1: What is felt paper?
Felt paper is a type of textured stock with a soft, toothy surface. It provides a premium, tactile feel that enhances the look and experience of printed materials.

Q2: Why does my print look different on felt paper compared to smooth paper?
Felt paper's texture naturally results in a more varied ink or toner laydown. On digital presses, the raised fibers and uneven surface can cause minor visual inconsistencies in solid areas, gradients, and small text.

Q3: Is this considered a print defect?
No. Variations in coverage or density are an expected characteristic of printing on textured stocks like felt. These are not production errors but a natural result of the paper's surface interacting with toner or ink.

Q4: Can these inconsistencies be reduced?
We optimize our press settings and toner density for textured stocks, but some level of visual variation is unavoidable. Choosing designs with less solid coverage or avoiding fine detail in critical areas can help.

Q5: Would a different printing method improve the result?
Offset printing generally handles textured stocks better than digital printing due to how ink is absorbed into the paper. However, for short runs or variable data projects, digital remains a cost-effective option.

Q6: Should I consider a different paper stock?
If color uniformity and sharp detail are a priority, a smoother stock like Boones house silk cover 10%pc or Boones house uncoated smooth may be a better fit. We're happy to help you find the right balance between aesthetics and performance.

Q7: Can I request a sample?
Absolutely. We can provide samples printed on felt and other recommended stocks to help you visualize the results before placing a full order.
